Jun 09, 2023

TAMPA, FL — A man faces charges after officials discovered a gun in his carry-on luggage at the Tampa International Airport on Friday, according to authorities and a report.

According to a statement released by airport officials, the incident happened at Airside F around 8 p.m. and prompted authorities to suspend all screening and movement of passengers. Officials said passengers were then redirected to the airport's main terminal for additional security screening.

Normal operations resumed around 9:45 p.m., airport officials said.

Officials said that approximately a dozen flights arriving and departing at Airside F flights were delayed. No flights were canceled and no other airport areas were affected.

"Ensuring safety is our number one job, and that's what occurred tonight," TPA Executive Vice President of Operations John Tiliacos said. "We are thankful for the actions of our officers and our TSA partners, who quickly contained the situation and helped operations resume safely as fast as possible."

The man with the gun was identified as 25-year-old Abraham Othman Yacoub, according to a WFLA report. He was charged with tampering with physical evidence and carrying a concealed firearm into an unauthorized or prohibited area, WFLA reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
